To me, California's Gold Country epitomised The American Dream. Majestic, pioneering, optimistic and faded. The once busy railway routes reduced to ferrying tourists from museum to museum whilst locals preserved the spirit of Main St at all costs.

Why were there so many lawyers in one small town?

The frontier had gone, replaced by comfortable bolt-holes for transient tourists - their passing reinforcing the frozen time that had petrified the area.
